[Japan] On August 6, 2026, HashPort (Tokyo, Japan) conducted Japan’s first pilot test of in-store payments using stablecoins at the “Lawson Takanawa Gateway City” store.

In this pilot, users made payments using “HashPort Wallet,” a non-custodial wallet provided by HashPort, while the store’s payment processing utilized the features of “HashPort Wallet for Biz,” a stablecoin payment service for businesses and stores provided by HashPort. The system allows stores to accept stablecoin payments through “HashPort Wallet for Biz,” which is integrated into standard convenience store POS systems, without the need for stores to set up or manage their own wallets. The pilot confirmed that payments can be completed at the point of sale.
This pilot marks the first successful instance in Japan of a stablecoin payment linked to a convenience store POS system. It is also reportedly the first instance in Japan of a stablecoin payment made without gas fees.
In Japan, the infrastructure for issuing and circulating stablecoins is gradually being established, and their use in the payments sector is highly anticipated. HashPort Wallet for Biz is expanding the availability of stablecoin payments to the food and beverage, retail, and service industries as a solution capable of transforming the fee structures and funding cycles associated with existing digital payment methods. The company plans to release multi-wallet and privacy-enhanced payment features in the near future and is also set to begin a pilot program for adoption at two dental clinics in the Kanto region.
Furthermore, with the growing adoption of AI agents, support for “MCP (Model Context Protocol)”—a standard that enables wallets to securely interact with AI—is becoming increasingly important.HashPort Wallet MCP connects HashPort Wallet to AI agents such as Claude and ChatGPT, providing an environment where users can seamlessly check balances, send stablecoins, and use various Web3 services based on their instructions. It requires user authorization for every asset transfer and maintains a non-custodial model where users manage their own private keys, thereby balancing security and convenience. The first release is scheduled for September 2026, and the goal is to establish the wallet as the foundation for payments and agent-based commerce in the era of AI agents.
