The ANA and American Express Partnership
Travel Styles Are Diversifying
American Express began as a transportation company and is now in its 176th year. It currently operates in over 200 countries and regions, including Japan. In 1891, the company launched its proprietary traveler’s check system with the aim of improving convenience and safety for travelers.

The partnership with ANA began on October 5, 2009, with the launch of the “ANA American Express Card.” In November 2014, the company announced the “ANA American Express Premium Card.”American Express has partnered with ANA to allow cardmembers to redeem “Membership Rewards Program points” for ANA miles and to offer exclusive charter flights for cardmembers. It is not merely a joint card issuance arrangement; rather, as explained by Naomi Mizumura, Senior Vice President of the Card Business Division at American Express International, Inc., explained, “This partnership goes beyond simply co-issuing a card; it embodies both companies’ commitment to providing high-quality service and enriching the travel experience.”
American Express has released the “American Express Global Travel Trends Report,” which shows that 64 percent of Japanese people plan to take three or more trips, a significant increase from 39 percent the previous year. Additionally, 22 percent plan to take six or more trips, nearly double the previous year’s 11 percent. On the other hand, only 2% of respondents said they had no travel plans, a significant decrease from 17% the previous year. In recent years, attending sporting events and music festivals has also become a popular reason for travel.
Furthermore, in August 2026, the program will undergo its first comprehensive redesign and overhaul of benefits. Through this collaboration, the two companies aim to further strengthen their partnership and enhance the card’s value by making it easier to earn miles through everyday card use.
Card Design Revamp
Will It Be Easier to Earn ANA Miles?
Nao Yamamoto, Vice President of Consumer Products & Partnerships in the Card Business Division at American Express, outlined the details of this redesign. He highlighted three key features: “a card design that modernizes the ANA brand identity,” “card product design that makes it easier to earn ANA miles,” and “expanded benefits—such as lounge access and dining—that enrich both travel and daily life.”
This marks the first redesign of the card face since its launch in 2009. The new design embodies the ANA brand’s vision with a more modern and sophisticated aesthetic, conveying a sense of premium quality. Additionally, three types of cards will be issued, each with a more distinct identity.

Additionally, cardholders will receive access to the “Power Lounge Premium” at Haneda Airport Terminal 2, as well as a dining cashback benefit offering 20% cashback—up to a maximum of 20,000 yen per year—when using the “Pocket Concierge” dining reservation service.
Additionally, cardholders receive 2,000 bonus miles for continued membership, a 25% bonus on flight miles, and 3 miles for every 100 yen spent on ANA-related purchases. Furthermore, Priority Pass access is free up to twice a year.
As a new Premium benefit, members will receive 30,000 bonus miles for annual card spending of 6 million yen (including tax) or more. Additionally, members can earn a “Dining Cashback” of 20%—up to a maximum of 40,000 yen per year—for using the “Power Lounge Premium” at Haneda Airport Terminal 2 and the “Pocket Concierge” service.

What is the strategic positioning of ANA’s card business?
Experiences that enhance the appeal of daily life and travel

As part of ANA’s strategic positioning for its credit card business, the goal is to expand touchpoints beyond just flights to include everyday life. The ANA Mileage Club currently has 47 million members. Launched in 1997, it has grown into a program that integrates daily life with travel. Miles are earned not only when flying but also in various aspects of daily life.
The ANA Group is expanding its “Life Solution Services,” a collective term for services that allow members to earn miles and points in everyday life and shopping situations—beyond just flying. In addition to the ANA Card, the group offers “ANA Denki,” an electricity service that allows members to earn a fixed number of ANA miles each month by paying their electricity bills, and “ANA Mobile,” a low-cost SIM (MVNO) service that lets members earn miles on their smartphone usage fees.
Furthermore, the group operates services where customers can earn and redeem miles, including the online shopping mall “ANA Mall,” the payment service “ANA Pay,” and the travel and tour brand “ANA Travelers.” Additionally, accumulated miles can be exchanged for award tickets or converted into “ANA SKY Coins,” which can be used to pay for airline tickets and travel products.
Senior Executive Officer Shinya Kanda stated that by combining various benefits, customers can earn a large number of miles in a short period of time. He also expressed his hope that customers would enjoy their travel experiences, noting that award tickets are available starting at 6,000 miles one-way for domestic flights and 20,000 miles one-way in economy class for international flights to Hawaii.
