[Japan] The MMD Research Institute, operated by MMDLabo, conducted the “July 2026 Survey on Payment and Financial Service Usage Trends” from July 16 to July 21, 2026, targeting 25,000 men and women aged 18 to 79.
When asked about the payment methods they typically use—based on the proportion of payments made in the most recent month (multiple answers allowed)—among 25,000 men and women aged 18 to 79,“Cash” was the most common at 75.0%, followed by “Credit Cards” at 64.6% and “QR/Barcode Payments” at 49.0%. Additionally, when asked about credit card usage, 79.8% responded that they “use them.”

Next, when 19,945 credit card users were asked about the credit cards they currently use (multiple answers allowed), “Rakuten Card” was the most common at 53.9%, followed by “PayPay Card” at 24.3% and “Aeon Card” at 21.0%.
Among 25,000 men and women aged 18 to 79, 22,700 of whom own a smartphone under contract with a telecommunications carrier were asked about their use of QR and barcode payments; 74.2% responded that they “use them.”
Next, when the 16,838 users of QR and barcode payments were asked which services they currently use (multiple answers allowed), “PayPay” was the most common at 66.0%, followed by “Rakuten Pay” at 35.3% and “d-Barai” at 30.8%.
When 25,000 men and women aged 18 to 79 were asked about their use of card-based contactless payments, 60.4% responded that they “use them.”
Next, when 15,096 users of card-based contactless payments were asked which contactless payment methods they currently use (multiple answers allowed),“Visa Contactless” was the most common at 42.2%, followed by “WAON Card” at 27.5% and “Suica” at 25.1%.
When 22,700 people who own a smartphone under a contract with a telecommunications carrier were asked about their use of smartphone-based contactless payments, 38.6% responded that they “use them.”
Next, when we asked the 8,755 users of smartphone-based contactless payment services which contactless payment services they currently use (multiple answers allowed), “Mobile Suica” was the most common at 30.8%, followed by “Visa Contactless” at 29.4% and “WAON” at 16.6%.
When 25,000 men and women aged 18 to 79 were asked about their use of bank accounts, 88.9% responded that they “use one.”
Next, when 22,221 bank account users were asked about the bank accounts they currently use (multiple answers allowed), “Japan Post Bank” was the most common at 59.2%, followed by “Rakuten Bank” at 29.3% and “Mitsubishi UFJ Bank” at 26.3%.
When 25,000 men and women aged 18 to 79 were asked about their use of securities firms, 36.4% responded that they “use one.”
Next, when 9,100 securities firm users were asked about the firms they currently use (multiple answers allowed), “Rakuten Securities” was the most common at 39.7%, followed by “SBI Securities” at 31.8% and “Nomura Securities” at 17.0%.(paymentnavi Editorial Team)
