[United States] Stripe (San Francisco, California, U.S.) announced on August 19, 2026, that it has agreed to acquire OpenRouter, a provider of an AI model gateway and routing platform.OpenRouter helps businesses optimize their token usage (token routing) by automatically routing more than 400 AI models—provided by over 80 providers—based on specific tasks.
Stripe reportedly provides financial infrastructure to businesses, including the majority of companies that develop and build AI. Stripe has long helped businesses maximize their revenue by optimizing various factors, such as payment methods, Authorization Rate, and Fraud prevention.

Furthermore, Stripe reportedly began offering products such as “Token Billing” last year to help businesses optimize token costs and enable more efficient token routing. However, token optimization goes beyond mere cost reduction. There are a wide range of variables to consider, such as which model to use for each task, and at what speed and price to process them.Furthermore, this challenge is becoming even more complex due to the rapid succession of new AI model releases and pricing revisions.
OpenRouter has built a platform that dynamically evaluates each request to the AI and routes it to the optimal model based on factors such as task complexity, price, speed, and reliability; companies such as NVIDIA, Zoom, and Lovable are already using it.
