[Japan] Resona Bank (Tokyo, Japan), Saitama Resona Bank (Saitama),Kansai Mirai Bank (Osaka), and Minato Bank (Hyogo) (collectively referred to as Resona HD) have partnered with Visa Worldwide Japan (Tokyo, Japan) to launch Japan’s first CO2 emissions visualization service utilizing debit card transaction data, effective August 21, 2026.

This service is a core initiative of the participatory sustainability initiative “Resona SustainPay Action,” which began in July 2025.Amid a surge in disasters caused by climate change, there are people who want to take environmentally conscious actions but feel daunted by environmental conservation efforts—often because they “don’t know where to start.”Cashless payments generate fewer CO2 emissions compared to cash payments (according to the “Cashless Roadmap 2023” by the Payments Japan Association, a general incorporated association). Through cashless payments, the service aims to provide a new financial experience that enables each user to contribute to solving environmental and social issues as part of their daily lives.
The service calculates the CO₂ emissions generated during the production and provision of purchased goods and services based on the user’s debit card spending amount and where the purchases were made, and displays this information on the Resona Group app.It also offers advice and articles on energy conservation, transportation, and consumer behavior in daily life to support users in changing their behavior to reduce their environmental impact.
Resona HD will host an awareness-raising event for college students titled “(Tentative Name) Student Idea Competition: More! SustainPay Action.” Through co-creation projects with college students and various promotional campaigns, “Resona SustainPay Action” has been working to raise awareness of the initiative and build momentum. This time, the awareness-raising event for college students will serve as the final presentation session for the co-creation project.
The Resona Group began offering debit cards in 2011 and has implemented various initiatives while strengthening integration with the Resona Group app, including becoming the first major bank to include a debit card as a standard feature with checking accounts. As of the end of March 2026, the number of debit cards issued stood at 3.4 million.
