[Japan] Throughout October 2026, there have been continuous reports of leaks involving personal information, ID information, and credit card information resulting from unauthorized access targeting major domestic companies and platform operators. In addition, incidents have occurred in which leaked card numbers have been used in phishing scams, and card numbers have been stolen by exploiting vulnerabilities in payment merchants and shopping cart vendors. It is believed that the misuse of payment services and loyalty points is also occurring as a result of unauthorized logins and fraudulent emails using leaked IDs and passwords.
In the credit card industry in Japan, Japan’s Credit Card Security Guidelines have been established, and various initiatives have been implemented to strengthen fraud prevention measures, such as the adoption of EMV for in-person transactions and 3-D Secure authentication for online transactions. Thanks to multi-layered anti-fraud measures such as EMV 3-D Secure, the numbers in 2025 decreased slightly compared to 2024; however, continued efforts remain crucial.
