[Japan] What Is the Goal of PayPay’s (Tokyo, Japan) Partnership with 7-Eleven Stores? On July 31, 2026, Seven & i Holdings,Seven-Eleven Japan agreed to form strategic partnerships with SoftBank, PayPay, and LINE Yahoo, as well as with Sumitomo Mitsui Card, with the aim of co-creating next-generation customer experiences and lifestyle infrastructure that blend the physical and digital worlds.PayPay held a financial results briefing for the first quarter of fiscal year 2026 on the same day, during which Ichiro Nakayama, Representative Director, President, and CEO of PayPay, explained the objectives of the capital and business alliance with Seven & i Holdings.

Aiming
to Become a Digital Financial Platform Evolving the Everyday Shopping Experience

PayPay’s vision is to build one of Japan’s largest digital financial platforms. To achieve this, the company has strengthened its products and customer touchpoints. While PayPay began as a payment service, it has expanded its capabilities to include cards, banking, and securities. In the life insurance sector, the company announced the acquisition of shares in T&D Financial Life Insurance in June 2026.

Furthermore, through its collaboration with Seven & i Holdings, PayPay is expanding its customer touchpoints through everyday shopping. Regarding the significance of this partnership, PayPay states that its goal is not merely to integrate payment systems. Rather, it aims to connect in-store and digital customer touchpoints to evolve the everyday shopping experience.

Seven-Eleven Japan operates approximately 22,000 stores nationwide, with about 20 million customers visiting each day.Meanwhile, PayPay has approximately 75 million users, with about 30 million payment transactions processed daily. By combining the strengths of both companies, they can more effectively leverage each other’s vast amounts of daily data. Mr. Nakayama emphasized that this is where the great significance of the partnership lies.

Delivering
Digital Experiences to Stores Strategies for Global Expansion

Seven-Eleven Japan possesses a business foundation encompassing product development, logistics, store operations, a membership base, sales promotions, and mobile apps. Within this framework, PayPay will serve as a partner in the business model transformation, taking the lead in revitalizing digital customer touchpoints.By connecting members, IDs, data, points, apps, and sales promotions on the PayPay platform, the partnership will bring digital capabilities to stores.

As part of this medium- to long-term collaboration, the company places the highest priority on continuous, real-time data. Seven-Eleven Japan estimates that, approximately three years after its ID integration is complete, the volume of payment-related data (including non-PayPay transactions) that could be observed will amount to 18 billion data points annually.

Furthermore, by continuously training its AI engine, the company will be able to make recommendations better tailored to each individual. This is described as a long-term strategy aimed at improving LTV (Lifetime Value) in the age of AI.

Going forward, PayPay is exploring opportunities to expand its payment services overseas, including in the United States. While there are no concrete plans at this time, the company expects that the success of this partnership in Japan will serve as a catalyst for future global growth. At the same time, it aims to drive immediate growth as well.

Data Integration
with “7NOW” and Mobile Ordering Services Direct Outreach to Potential Customers

For example, by combining “7NOW” and mobile ordering with PayPay’s customer base and data, the company can more effectively reach potential customers. It aims to translate improvements in the customer experience into short-term growth and steadily implement this model.

PayPay will combine payment, purchase, and behavioral data to provide services tailored to each individual. This will increase LTV while keeping customer acquisition costs low. One metric that tracks this progress is ARPU (Average Revenue Per User). Moving forward, the company will continue to expand its customer touchpoints, accumulate data, and utilize that data to deliver optimal financial services. Under this strategy, it will promote growth investments and cross-usage to enhance corporate value over the medium to long term.
