[Japan] PayPay announced that the number of registered users for its cashless payment service “PayPay” has surpassed 75 million (as of August 9, 2026).
This means that more than one in two people in Japan, and about three out of four smartphone users in Japan, are using the service.

Furthermore, PayPay regards the promotion of identity verification (eKYC) as one of its key initiatives aimed at combating criminal activity and fraudulent use, as well as strengthening measures against money laundering and terrorist financing. The number of users who have completed identity verification (eKYC) has exceeded 43 million.
In line with the growth in registered users and the expansion of usage scenarios, the number of “PayPay” transactions in 2025 reached 8.88 billion, a 19% increase from the previous year. This reportedly accounts for over 20% of the 43.5 billion cashless payment transactions in Japan, which include credit cards, code-based payments, electronic money, and debit cards.
The accumulated payment data is also reportedly being utilized in PayPay’s financial services. For example, with the “PayPay Card,” the company uses PayPay usage history as reference information to refine the screening process—such as during application—and make credit decisions that are better tailored to each user’s circumstances.
For merchants as well, PayPay offers financial services tailored to their funding needs by leveraging daily payment data.Through “PayPay Funding,” a service provided by PayPay, the company calculates the available funding amount based on payment data and provides up to 1 million yen instantly when needed. Additionally, PayPay Bank offers loans of up to 10 million yen as soon as the same day through loan proposals and credit assessments based on payment data.
Furthermore, “PayPay” is reportedly widely used not only for payments but also for peer-to-peer money transfers. Its share of the code-based payment transfer market in 2025 expanded from approximately 96% the previous year to approximately 98%. (paymentnavi Editorial Team)
