[Japan] STORES (Tokyo, Japan) announced that, in preparation for the government’s planned change to the consumption tax rate on food products starting in April 2027,announced that it will support the new tax rate across all of its services, including “STORES POS,” “STORES Online Store,” “STORES Mobile Order,” and “STORES Invoice Payment.”

STORES has leveraged the mechanisms it developed to accommodate the tax rate changes when the reduced tax rate system was introduced in 2019. The company has now completed development of the features necessary for this latest tax rate change and will begin rolling them out sequentially. Additionally, by providing functions for bulk tax rate configuration and scheduled settings, STORES aims to reduce the administrative burden on businesses resulting from the system change.

As part of measures to combat rising prices, the Japanese government is considering the introduction of a system to temporarily lower the consumption tax rate applied to food products to 1% starting in April 2027. If this system is implemented, businesses handling food products will need to change tax rate settings for each sales channel they use, such as POS registers, online stores, and ordering systems.

For small and medium-sized businesses operating stores with limited staff, these adjustments could pose a significant burden in terms of preparation and configuration work. In particular, businesses that operate multiple sales channels—such as brick-and-mortar stores, online shops, and mobile ordering—will need to update each system on the same day, which is expected to complicate the process.

STORES states that it will support the new tax rates across its various services, including “STORES Register,” “STORES Online Store,” “STORES Mobile Order,” and “STORES Invoice Payment.” By offering features such as bulk tax rate configuration and scheduling functions across multiple sales channels, the company aims to reduce the burden on small and medium-sized businesses resulting from the system changes.

‍Furthermore, there will be no additional charges for using the features related to the tax rate change. (paymentnavi Editorial Team)
