[Japan] The Japan Credit Association (JCA, Tokyo, Japan), a general incorporated association, conducts a monthly credit card trends survey of 26 credit card issuers to track monthly trends in credit card credit extended and other metrics, and has compiled the results for May 2026.
According to the survey, the amount of credit extended for credit card purchases in May 2026 was 10,204,334 million yen, representing a 2.4% increase from the previous month.Cash advance loans totaled 136,607 million yen, an increase of 18.0% from the previous month. Total credit extended amounted to 10,340,941 million yen, an increase of 2.6% from the previous month.
The number of credit card purchase contracts stood at 2,097,902,581.
Furthermore, with the aim of monitoring monthly trends in shopping credit extended and related metrics, the association continuously conducts a survey on the shopping credit sector targeting 15 credit companies; it has announced the results for May 2026.According to the report, the amount of credit extended for shopping credit in May 2026 was 599,857 million yen, a 7.3% decrease from the previous month and a 2.0% decrease compared to the same month of the previous year. The number of shopping credit contracts stood at 793,706.
On the other hand, the outstanding balance of shopping credit stood at 18,635,374 million yen, representing a 0.1% increase from the previous month and a 2.4% increase compared to the same month of the previous year.
Of the total amount of credit extended and the number of contracts for shopping credit, the amounts and numbers related to automobile sales were 418,299 million yen and 149,071 contracts, respectively. (paymentnavi Editorial Team)
